Houses in Viñales town

Traffic in Viñales

From Havanna we continued our journey towards Viñales National Park with Viazul bus. It had been a nice surprise that nowadays you can buy and pay for your bus tickets online without a problem. Our first bus journey in Cuba was not without problems, however... we did leave Havanna more or less on time but we had travelled less than 20 minutes before the bus died on the road. All the passengers were told to get off and wait by the side of the road while the driver and his assistants (all the buses always seem to have at least three employees on them - one of them drives but I never figured out if the others had some sort of a job to do) were lying under the bus, presumably trying to fix whatever was wrong with it. We were waiting around for about two hours, once it started to rain heavily at least we were let back on the bus, but they never managed to fix the bus. Finally a new bus arrived and we got to continue our journey. As a side note, the toilet didn't work in the new bus either (and as we found out later on, it never worked in any of the buses). Therefore we arrived in Viñales more than two hours later than planned at the edge of starvation. The bus was met by a huge herd of people offering accommodation services and while walking to our pre-booked Airbnb accommodation we saw that practically all the houses were offering accommodation. It seems you will not end up without a roof over your head nor will you stay hungry - there are also restaurants side by side. It is obviously a very touristy, but pleasant and relaxing place to hang out for a couple of days.

Sadosta 90 % menee valtion tehtaisiin, joissa tuotetaan teollisia sikareita kuten Cohibaa. 10 % jää siis viljelijälle ja siitä he tekevät käsin käärittyjä artesaanisikareita. Vierailun yhteydessä saimme kokeilla yhtä näistä "puro"-sikareista, jonka pää piti kastaa kuubalaiseen luomuhunajaan. Tällä tavoin kuulemma Che Guevarakin poltteli sikareitaan.

How cool she is, riding her horse with her cigar...

The artisan cigar maker at work

Our Airbnb host arranged us a horseback riding trip (25 CUC per person) which turned out to be an excellent experience. It was just the two of us plus a "guide", a very young and very shy boy who hardly said a word throughout the trip. While helping me to get on the horse, he asked if I have any horseback riding experience and apparently took my response "un poco" as affirmative for doing full-on galloping on the forest trails. In any case it was really great to be riding in the spectacularly beautiful Viñales valley and visit a tobacco farm where they make high-quality cigars with natural methods from the beginning to end - even the fields are plowed with an ox. According to the employee of the farm who was showing us around, this is because we are in a national park and therefore only organic methods are allowed and no chemicals can be used. Pretty much everything in Cuba is produced organically though, simply as there are no chemicals or tractors available. 90 % of what they produce at the tobacco farm goes to the state-owned factories where they produce cigars such as Cohiba with mechanical means. The farmer stays with 10 % of his crop of which they make their artisan cigars by hand. We got to try one of these "puro" cigars by dipping the end in organic Cuban honey before smoking it - I hear this is how Che Guevara liked his cigars as well. Although we are not smokers in general, we did buy a pack of cigars to be given as gifts and also for smoking some in Cuba as that is what you do. We also visited another farm that produced coffee and honey, but that was a quick visit and we didn't do any shopping there. On the way back our guide was apparently sufficiently impressed by our riding skills to encourage the horses to gallop off even faster, which resulted in a couple of nerve-wrecking moments when I thought I'm about to fall off and could already see myself lying in a Cuban hospital with a broken leg... but we made it back all in one piece and fully enjoyed the day!

Viñales valley and me

Mural de la Prehistoria

Depiction of native tribe's life at the entrance of Cueva del Indio

Toisena Viñalesin päivänämme päätimme ottaa hop on hop off -bussin (5 CUC per hlö), jolla pääsisimme näkemään enemmän laaksosta. Luolassa toimi jonkinlainen baari/ravintola, jonka jätimme testaamatta. Muita pysäkkejä bussireitin varrella oli näköalapaikka, josta avautui kyllä vaikuttavat näköalat laakson yli sekä hieman hämmentävä "Mural de la Prehistoria" -kalliomaalaus, jonka lähelle päästäkseen olisi pitänyt maksaa pääsymaksu. Mielestäni sen näki ihan tarpeeksi hyvin bussistakin.

At the Cueva del Indio

Boat trip at the Cueva del Indio

On our second day in Viñales we decided to use the hop on hop off bus (5 CUC per person) to see more of the valley. We really wanted to see the cave called Cueva del Indio which to be honest was the only really worthwhile stop along the bus route. I had read in some reviews that it was way too packed with tourists, but at the time of our visit it was not too crowded at all. The cave is pretty small and it doesn't take more than 5 - 10 minutes to walk through, but you see lots of really interesting rock formations. The highlight however is the boat trip on the subterranean river that is included in the entrance fee (5 CUC per person). The boat ride takes maybe about 10 minutes and finishes up in a really beautiful little spot. As we would have had to wait quite a while for the next bus, we decided to walk to the next cave, Palenque de los Cimarrones about a kilometre way. We might as well have skipped this one to be honest, as there was nothing much to see. Apparently African slaves who had escaped from their owners used to live and hide in these caves, so in some nooks and crannies there were some dummies supposedly depicting the slaves. At the exit of the cave we were scared to death with a toy snake and then an extremely short dance show of sorts was performed, that presumably was depicting the lives of the slaves. There was a restaurant/bar in the cave which we didn't try out. Other stops along the way included a view point, where you did get an amazing view over the valley, as well as the slightly baffling Mural de la Prehistoria that you would have had to pay to see up close. I thought I could see enough from the bus.

A slightly questionable dance performance at Palenque de los Cimarros

Viñales was a really pleasant and relaxing place where we spent possibly the nicest days we had in Cuba. Obviously at the time we didn't know that yet, as we still had lots of adventures ahead of us in different parts of Cuba!

Tuo indian cave ei tehnyt meihin kovin suurta vaikutusta, mahtoikohan sinullakin olla opastus veneessä saksaksi? Minusta hieman turn off, vaikka saksaa osaankin....
