Cienfuegos

Me pääsimme kuitenkin bussiin ja muuten ongelmitta perille.

Arc of Triumph

From Viñales we continued our journey once again by bus towards the city of Cienfuegos, which is known for its beautiful architecture. The historical centre is an UNESCO world heritage site and it is nicknamed "The Pearl of the South". We started the trip a bit late and the whole process of getting into the bus was rather chaotic, as it appeared they were overbooked and some passengers had to be sent off by a taxi colectivo. However we made it onto the bus and got to our destination without any other trouble.

Hyvä näköalapaikka on Hotel Union lähellä aukiota, jonka kattoterassilta avautuu hienot näköalat kaupungin ylle. No mikäs siinä, kookosjäätelöä sitten!

Ice cream shop that will never give up its principles...

... to serve only coconut ice cream!

After finding our Airbnb accommodation and settling in, we decided to go have a look at the city. The historical centre with its most famous square, Plaza de Armas and Jose Martí park, was just a short walk away. Before we could immerse ourselves into the undeniably beautiful architecture, we had some bodily needs to take care of; we were starving and this was the first (but not the last!) time in Cuba that we had hard time finding something to eat. Being smack in the centre of the city I had imagined it being full of restaurants and bars, but no. We passed a couple of closed restaurants, a bar that served no food at all and finally found a bar that could serve us a cheese sandwich. So we ate cheese sandwiches, which at least didn't break the budget, and were finally able to concentrate more on our surroundings. The most beautiful buildings along the square are mainly from 1920's and include for example a small arc of triumph that might make you think you are in Paris and a statue of Jose Martí. The amazing buildings surrounding the square include for example a cathedral, a theatre and municipal government buildings. A great (and free!) view point is the rooftop terrace of the nearby Hotel Union, where you can see a stunning view over the square and much more. As we were heading back towards our accommodation in the evening we were passing a government-owned ice cream bar, which as part of the general propaganda announced on its front to never give up its principles, and decided to indulge in a sweet treat. As we got in we could see the walls covered in pictures of tempting portions of ice creams, all different types. Once the waiter approached us and we asked for a menu, he told us the only available type is coconut ice cream. Sure, coconut ice cream it is then! So far eating in Cienfuegos had proved to be a bit of a challenge...

Beach along the promenade

At Punta Gorda

Our programme for the following day included a visit to Punta Gorda, the southernmost tip of the city area. The main thoroughfare of the city, El Paseo del Prado, leads all the way there and is deemed to be pleasant for walking with its bay views and benches to rest on, so we decided to walk the 3 kilometres' distance to Punta Gorda.  We had seen on the map that there is also a small sandy beach along the way, but luckily we didn't pack our bikinis - the beach was indeed very small and also not very inviting, so we didn't join the local kids frolicking in the water. Punta Gorda has a lot of very elegant or indeed opulent mansions, including the Palacio de Valle which is now operating as a restaurant. Our budget did not allow to eat there but we wanted to have a bit nicer a meal than the day before, so we ended up having a relatively good (but rather expensive) meal in one of the sea view restaurants. In any case Punta Gorda was a pleasant quiet area with a little park at the very southern tip, where it was nice to get a bit of rest before heading back into the city. Luckily on the way back we managed to catch a local bus that didn't cost many local pesos  so we didn't need to take one of the many offered bicycle taxis. In the evening, while heading into the centre for dinner, we decided to give a go to the horse taxi for the sake of the experience (and since we had already walked quite a bit that day) and that was pretty fun and didn't even work out to be expensive for such a short way. The driver invited me to the driver seat for the sake of having some pictures, which was fun as well. This time that we were out later it turned out much easier to find a place to have dinner and there was no shortage of people promoting restaurants on the street.

Punta Gorda

Maybe I will have a career as a horse taxi driver in Cienfuegos!

As we still had the following morning before continuing our journey, we booked a half-day trip from a travel agency to El Nicho waterfalls about an hour away. The trip was just for the two of us and the taxi driver showed up as agreed the following morning at 8am. The driver was a nice guy and we had nice conversations throughout the journey. El Nicho is a popular day trip from Cienfuegos but we didn't find it too crowded at all. There is a short hike around the water falls with a couple of pools for swimming and lots of stunning scenery. We spent a really pleasant couple of hours in there walking in the nature and swimming in rather refreshing (read: ice cold!) water. In the afternoon it was time to head back to the bus station and continue towards our next destination: Playa Girón.
